The thigh gap is increasingly becoming a desirable body attribute for young women, and now you buy some thigh gap jewellery to hang down between your skinny lil’ legs. A designer from Singapore named Soo Kyung Bae has created the first thigh gap jewellery which is probably going to be the next must have item on every young girl’s lips.

Thigh gap jewellery consists of a bespoke gold chain that hangs in the space created between the girl’s thighs. It’s 18k gold and comes in the form of chains that loop around the top of your thighs and dangle a gold tassel in between them. Naturally, it retails for between $175 (£124) and $195 (£138). I mean come on, something like that wasn’t going to come cheap now was it?
Clearly these are aimed at the minority of women in the world population whose legs don’t touch above the knees, but even then I’m not sure of the appeal of them? I mean who is even going to be looking down there to even see it? And even if people do see it, will they actually think that it’s hot and/or cool and not just kind of unhealthy and gross? I’m not convinced, but then I might not be so down with the kids these days so maybe I’m wrong.
Actually, it looks like I might not be the only questioning this kind of jewellery as it turns out that the website is in fact fake and that you can’t actually buy any of the products in question. Bae decided to create the website to raise awareness about the worrying thing gap trend that is prevalent in young women today:
The jewellery pieces take the thigh-gap trend to another level, the pieces are created in hopes of sparking questions.
If we let the media keep popularising such unrealistic body ideal, will this eventually become reality?
By using outrageous products, I hope to bring a provocative jolt that leads us to ponder and reflect upon what we are like as a society and the absurd things we value and obsess over – as well as how this creates unnecessary pressure for women and girls.
Fair play, I guess that makes a lot of sense. I mean I wasn’t even aware that the thigh gap was a desirable boy trait these days until I saw all this so that’s at least one person that has been educated by Bae’s actions.
For more ridiculous jewellery, here’s the Chinese selling some live turtle necklaces. Unfortunately these are actually real though.
